About 20 years ago I was the envy of my high school when I rolled into the bike shed on my Suzuki RG 50 F, this is because the “Gamma” was the hottest bike on the market at the time. I thank my lucky stars that Puzey was not making bikes back then, because if the MXR 125 Motard had been around, I would have been too ashamed to show my face.
Puzey has obviously done its research on its target market and I am pretty sure that every schoolboy out there will be chomping at the bit to get a MXR 125 under his butt. The build quality is good and just goes to prove that these Chinese bikes are now ready to compete with their Japanese counterparts. Not only are spares more readily available, but also the bikes are priced so well that one can no longer ignore their presence in the market.
The 125cc, 4-stroke motor pushes out 8.5kW at 9 500rpm with a torque peak of 8.5Nm at 7 500rpm. While this may not be enough to slide the back wheel out around the corners, you will have tons of fun trying. The handling is fantastic and she sticks to the road through the corners.
The MXR’s top speed of approximately 95km/h may not be greased lightning, but it is more than enough to get you a few speeding fines. The fuel tank holds 7.3 liters and depending on how you ride it, you should get a fuel consumption of around 3.8 liters per 100km.
The 4-speed gearbox is smooth and although I found the first gear a little too short, it is not a major issue. Short shifting into second gears gets the bike away from the cars at the robots, which is exactly what you want to do.
One of the biggest plus factors is that it only weighs in at 80kg, this along with the fact that you have adjustable front and rear suspension means that while the MXR may look like a little beast, it behaves well on the road and is very easy to ride. All of these factors mean that it is a fantastic choice for the first time rider.
At a price tag of only R14 500.00 it makes the MXR 125 Motard pretty hard to ignore. So why not pop into Cyberbike and reserve one for “Little Johnny’s” Christmas present?
